Above the Danube Valley near Regensburg arises the "Hall of the Fallen", a Hall of Fame for major German personalities built in the years 1830-1842 by Leo von Klenze. After defeats in the Napoleonic wars, and because of the political fragmentation of Germany, people began to search for a national identity. Mainly, King Ludwig I of Bavaria lapsed such reveries and wanted a neoclassical temple, paradoxically inspired by Germanic themes, to be built as a counterpart to the Parthenon in Athens. The building now houses 128 busts and 65 plaques, including Paracelsus, Charles the Great, Albrecht Dürer, Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang von Goethe.
Currently, the Walhalla is being renovated until 2013 for 11.35 million euros.
