The Porta Nigra, constructed about 180 A.D. as the northern town gate of the Augusta Treverorum, today's Trier, is the most preserved town gate of the Roman Imperium north of the alps. Since 1986 the Porta Nigra is a World Heritage Site of the UNESCO.
