The Lupu Bridge in Shanghai spans the Huangpu River with 550m length. Thus, it hold the title of the largest arch bridge in the world until it was exceeded by another Chinese bridge. At the inauguration on 28 June 2003, the NBA basketball player Yao Ming crossed the structure as one of the first. The local government built this monument for 2.5 billion yuan (250 million €) for the Expo 2010 contrary to allegations because of the oversized and expensive design of an Arch. Unlike other bridges of this dimension, there will be charged no fees for the traverse. A total over 35000 tons of steel were used, through the cramped premises, it reaches total length of 3900 m including all access roads. A special feature are the elevators inside the arches which lead to a viewing platform at 100m altitude. The name Lupu indicates the conjunction of the two districts of Luwan and Pudong. On 11th May 2009, it received the Outstanding Structural Award of 2008 from the IABSE.
