The Proteus is a submarine featured in the movie "Fantastic Voyage" (Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp., 1966). In order to save the life of a sovjet scientist, the Proteus and its crew are miniaturized and injected into the veins of the patient. During its 60 minute mission, it is supposed to bring the crew to the brain where a blood clot is to be destroyed using a laser rifle. The movie was awarded two oscars for best special effects and production design.
