Jarvis Hunt designed the building in the style of Beaux-Arts and it consists of 850,000 square feet a Grand Hall that opens to a 95 foot high ceiling. Union Station made newspaper headlines on June 17, 1933 when the "Kansas City Massacre" took place outside of the building. Renovations of the station where held from 1997 to 1999. It is currently a nonprofit organization which contains a Science City interactive science center, the H & R Block City Stage Theater, the Union Cafe, the Harvey House Diner, gift shops, and a planetarium.
