Located in Washington D.C., the United States Department of the Treasury is a cabinet department and houses the national treasury itself. Established in 1789 as an act of congress, its purpose was to manage government revenue. The first Secretary of the Treasury was Alexander Hamilton who almost single-handedly conceived of the national financial system.
