The Channel Dwelling is designed for a small family seeking to find balance between public and private, exposure and shelter, construct and nature.
The placement on the site, adjacent to Old Mason Way at the south east corner of Crissy field, captures the views of the bay and beach while bowing to a desire to keep the waterfront available for all to enjoy. The dwelling is canted slightly off true north, shifting the view axis toward Golden Gate Bridge and, by paralleling Old Mason Way, minimizing the impact on the public park.
Two long thin concrete walls running on an east west axis provide a backdrop for the stage-like presence of the public wing of the dwelling while creating a protective channel for the private wing.
Circulation through the house takes place on a series of unconditioned decks and boardwalks sheltered under deep eaves. In order to navigate the house one must pass in and out of doors, an experience that fosters an increased awareness of the daily and seasonal cycles of the bay area. A short north-south axis captures sweeping views of the bay and defines the entry. It is crossed by a long east west axis that stitches together the pattern of staggered modules that make up the dwelling.
