The older span of the World's longest dual span bridge, crosses the Puget Sound in Washington state near city of Tacoma. The bridge is designed by Dexter R. Smith and was opened for traffic in the fall of 1950 after two and a half years of construction. The bridge's main span is 853 meters long and total suspended length is 1524 meters. The 18 meters wide deck is made of steel and is stiffened with 10 meter deep trusses it has a clearance of 57 meters over the Puget Sound. The stiffened deck earned the 1950 Tacoma Narrows Bridge a nickname Sturdy Gertie, as the old collapsed 1940 span was nicknamed Galloping Gertie because of its swaying deck. The 1950 span carries four westbound lanes of State Route 16 and two pedestrian / bicycle lanes. The two 154 meter tall towers are made of steel and support the two 51 centimerter thick suspension cables that each consist of 8705 individual wires.
