Financed by John G. Shedd, the Shedd Aquarium opened in 1930 as a gift to the city of Chicago. It was the largest indoor aquarium for a number of years, and today maintains that grandeur with 5 million gallons of water, 25,000 fish and over 2 million patrons a year.
