This is the northern half of the restored section of the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu. There are two main tourist areas of the wall. The most popular section is at Badaling, NW of the capital Beijing. The second most popular section is this section at Mutianyu, about 79km (49 miles) NE of Bejing. It is the longest restored tourist section of the wall at 22km (14 miles) and was opened to tourists on May 1, 1986. The entire 22km has been modelled. The wall joins the Juyong Pass in the west. Construction of the Great Wall started in around 700 BC but most of the current wall dates from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). At that time the wall stretched across the country for approximately 6,400km (4,000 miles). Of that wall around 40% has since disappeared, 40% is in poor condition and 20% has been restored. There is a cable car and a chair lift to take visitors to and from the wall, both modelled separately, plus a stainless steel toboggan slide for a thrilling ride back down from the wall. There is a much more detailed version of this model in the 3D Warehouse. Modelled by Peter Olsen, Brighton-le-Sands, Australia.
