The Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship on the Great Lakes upon completion in 1958 and remained so until the early 1970s. She was used to carry taconite from mines near Duluth, Minnesota to iron works in Detroit, Toledo and other ports. On the afternoon of November 9, 1975 the Fitzgerald departed Superior, Wisconsin en route to the steel mill on Zug Island, near Detroit, Michigan. A second freighter, the Arthur M. Anderson trailed not far behind. On the following afternoon a freak storm arose with waves measuring up to 16 feet high. The Fitzgerald reported top side damage, a minor list and loss of radar. Slowing down so that the Anderson could come within transmission range and send radar data, the two ships headed toward White Fish Bay. Just past 7PM, the Anderson warned Fitzgerald of two freak waves that had just passed by and shortly after loss communication with the Fitzgerald.
