The Royal Dutch Embassy was built by star-architect Rem Koolhaas and his architectural studio Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) from 2000 to 2004. It is located along the River Spree-Canal near Alexanderplatz. The building is an architectural gesamtkunstwerk: a L-shaped structure surrounds a seperated cube designed with concrete, glas and aluminium. Inside, a continuous trajectory loops through the whole building until it ends on the roof. The so-called "Skybox" is one of the most remarkable components, a levitating extension on the western facade with a view to the River Spree, used by the embassador as a dining- and conference room. The design of this embassy building was awarded with the Architectural Award Berlin 2003 and the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture 2005.
