The 'Grote Kerk', a large Church built in Gorinchem around 1456 -1517. The crooked tower's one and a half metre lean, already began during the construction. The story about the foundation being of cowhides belongs to some of the fables that were told over time. The time of building seems long, from 1456 to 1517, but during construction the city dwellers had periods of famine , dyke breaks causing floods, pestilence and plagues
The old church was dismantled in the 19th century. The neoclassical follower was the replacement in 1851. In the original plans for the building of this new church, the new building was placed separately from the original tower......../////
De Grote kerk in Gorinchem gebouwd rond 1456 - 1517. De scheve toren die zelfs anderhalve meter uit het lood staat kreeg al tijdens de bouw te maken met verzakking. Het verhaal over de fundering van koeienhuiden behoort tot de vele fabelen die er over de toren verteld worden. De bouwtijd lijkt misschien lang 1456 - 1517, maar tijdens de bouw kregen de bewoners te maken met een hongersnood, dijkdoorbraken en pestepidemieen. De oude kerk werd in de negentiende eeuw afgebroken. De neoklassieke opvolger werd in 1851 ingewijd. In de oorspronkelijk plannen voor de bouw van de nieuwe kerk was deze los van de toren geplaatst.
