The largest suspension bridge in New England spans 3,428 meters long over Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. The bridges main suspension span is 488 meters long and has clearance of 63 meters. The suspension span is suspended from two 40 centimeters thick cables that each consist of 4,636 individual wires. The cables are held up by two 122 meter tall steel towers. The bridge is designed by Alfred Hedefine from Parsons, Brinckerhoff, Quade and Douglas. Construction of the bridge begun in April 5th 1966 and was finished three years later, June 28th 1969.
