High above the city of Weißenburg lies the renaissance fortress Wülzburg. This fortress has a very changeful history. It was erected from 1588 on at the place of a former cloister. The perfect pentagon has five bastions: "Roßmühle" (N), "Krebs" (E), "Jungfrau" (S), "Hauptwache" (SW) und "Kaltes Eck" (NW) with the latter two being somewhat smaller than the eastern ones. The fortress belongs to the City of Weißenburg since 1882, with exception of the castle's southern wing. In the first world war it served as war prison (Charles de Gaullle was imprisoned here), since 1929 as school youth hostel, during the second world war as internment camp, afterwards as refugee camp and retirement home. Today a part of the castle is used as vocational school and other parts of the fortress can be visited in guided tours. Several smaller buildings in the inner courtyard don't exist any more, one of the remaining being an Inn. [Source: Wikipedia.de]
In the courtyard a slightly elevated rectangle can be seen. Below it are the fortress cisterns, with the wells still standing above. In addition there is the "Tiefer Brunnen" (Deep Well) which was probably 145m deep and still is 133m deep today. Thus it is the sixth deepest well (including blocked ones) in the German speaking area. [Source: A. W. Glue in: Weißenburger Blätter 1/2007]
