Willard Library opened its doors in 1885 and is the oldest public library in the state of Indiana. Built with a grant from Willard Carpenter, it was created to be a public library for people of all classes, races, and sexes. Legend has it that the library is haunted by his daughter, Louise Carpenter, who was left out of his will when he died. The library is a beautiful Victorian Gothic structure designed by Reid & Reid (who also designed the Hotel del Coronado). It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
