Heysham 1 is the first of two nuclear power Stations at Heysham near Lancashire, England. They are both operated by British Energy which is now part of EDF. Construction of Heysham 1 was begun in 1978 by British Nuclear Design & Construction. Heysham 1 contains two Adavanged Gas Cooled Reactors (AGR). The first reactor began operating in 1983 and the second reactor beggan operating in 1984. Full operation was declared in 1989. It has a total generating capacity of 1150 MWe. Reactors were supplied by National Nuclear Corporation and the turbines by GEC. The station shares it reactor design with Harlepool Power Station. The power station is expected to operate until 2019.
