City Hall...Gorinchem is a city and municipality in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland./// Boeren en vissers stichtten rond het jaar 1000 op een wat hoger gelegen stuk land, nabij de monding van de Linge in de Merwede, een nederzetting, die zij Goriks Heem noemden. In het midden van de dertiende eeuw kwam Gorinchem en omgeving in het bezit van de heren van Arkel. Op 11 november 1382 kreeg Gorinchem stadsrechten van Otto van Arkel. Halverwege de veertiende eeuw werd er een stenen stadswal om Gorinchem gebouwd met poorten en torens. In 1673 werd de vestingstad Gorinchem deel van de Hollandse Waterlinie en na 1814 werd de stad een kernvesting van de Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie.
