ALL OF THIS IS FICTIONAL!!! N721BN and N722BN were originally ordered by Braniff, but were cancelled and instead delivered to Central Air Lines. Since relatively few DC-8-63CF aircraft existed in Central's fleet in 1969, N721BN was serving a milk run route from Los Angeles to Seattle to Anchorage to Tokyo (as the DC-8-61 has insufficient range to go across the Pacific Ocean easily [also hence the red]). On the morning January 30th, 1969, N721BN was about to operate the route as Central Air Lines Flight 909. Flight 909 was cleared for takeoff at 9:00 PST and lifted off from LAX, turning towards Los Angeles. An Eastern DC-8-61, operating as Flight 584, was on the landing approach to LAX from Chicago. At 9:02 PST, Flight 584's wingtip sliced away half of Flight 909's wing, including Flight 909's number four engine. Flight 909 crashed close to downtown Los Angeles, killing all 239 people on board. Flight 584 successfully landed at LAX without much incident. The cause was determined to be controller error. Sister ship N722BN was last known to be serving with V2 Airlines.
