Mainz Cathedral is the Episcopal Church of the diocese of Mainz and is dedicated to St. Martin of Tours. The cathedral dates back to a construction by Bishop Willigis from around 975. This 'national cathedral' was unusually large for the time, but it was destroyed in a fire at its consecration on 29.8.1009. Until 1036, the cathedral was rebuilt only by bishop Bardo as Romanesque pier basilica. Throughout history, there have been numerous alterations, such as the east choir by Emperor Henry IV, also a replacement of Willigis' old westwork and Gothic nave walls of 1279.
In 1769, the typical western stone tower was attached by Franz Ignaz Michael Neumann, son of the famous Balthasar Neumann.
The eastern main tower followed 1828 initially as a wrought-iron dome by Georg Moller, until in 1875 P.J.H. Cuypers created today's tower with pointed roof.
As one of the three Rhenish Imperial Cathedrals, the coronation of many kings took place here, including Emperor Henry II and Konrad II. The building is 116 m long and 83.5 m high (West Tower). This year, it's its 1000th anniversary.
