Built from 1934 to 1945 during times of Hitlers fascist regime, the Tempelhof airport in Berlin,Germany, even today is one of the three largest buildings on earth, among the Pentagon in Washington,D.C, USA and the Parliament Palace by former communist dictator Ceaucescou in Bucharest,Romania. About 1/3 of the original building plan was realised with an overall length of 1230 m ( 4035 ft) and a gross floor area of 284.000 sqm. The airport was built in monumental Neo Classicism Style and integrates high-functional complexity in its gigantic structure (hotels, congress center, restaurants etc.) which was unique at that times. The strucure became a prototype for modern airports and even the british star-architect Sir Norman Foster named the Tempelhof airport "the mother of all airports". After WWII, from 1948 to 1949,Tempelhof was used for the "Berlin Airlift" to supply the city of Berlin during the blockade of the Soviets. The Airlift Monument at Platz der Luftbrücke still reminds on this. From 1985 to 2006 the Tempelhof Airport has been used for small airplanes and civil air traffic. Since 2009 the airport is closed.
