Upon completion in 1964, Verrazano-Narrows Bridge's 4,260 foot span was the longest suspension span in the world (and remains the longest suspension bridge in the U.S.). Named after Giovanni da Verrazzano, an Italian explorer that was the first European to discover the New York Bay, and the Narrows strait.
