This was built in the early 14th century and during the next five centuries was altered many times. The other Toruń gates were originally similar, until the construction of gate towers in the 15th and 16th centuries. The main road from the port to the center of the town leads through this gate, and because known as the royal route. Along the exclusive Sailor’s Street lived the richest families of the nobility and the town elite. Next to the gate on the Vistula side were situated the bath-house, cloth-making facilities and the port buildings.
