One of the goals was to maximize shares of the beach without losing any precious views. My design measures 20 ft by 50 ft with the shorter side facing the ocean (North). It is a 2 stories home with a rooftop garden. The total conditioned area is roughly 1800 sq.ft because the stairways are separated from the interior to save energy. With the shorter side of the house facing the ocean, I widen the view by angle both north side and west side glass curtain wall. Everything is powered by photovoltaic panels locate above rooftop garden. These panels angle toward the west for maximum solar energy gain. They also protect the house from a harsh afternoon sun to minimize the need of air condition. The house is supported by 4 main columns locate at each corner of the building with one having the stairs wrapping around. These columns also act as a rain barrel. Interior piping systems link the rooftop lotus pond and appliances with the 4 supporting columns allow them to store rainwater and domestic grey-water. They provide a sustainable solution for garden irrigation systems as well as giving the whole structure some resistance during an earthquake. This house does not include garage to encourage homeowner to use public transportation.
