THE ‘MILIEU’ DESIGN CONCEPT San Francisco Bay waters metamorphosed into an oscillating green living roof supported by reminders of the Bay’s former forest groves overlooking the horizon. PROGRAM To create an ecologically balanced home that exists in greater harmony with the surroundings. MILIEU’s linear shape is orientated on an East/West axis to minimize Solar heat gain and maximize both views & cross-ventilation from the Bay. The interior space extends beyond the glass walls on cantilevered decks. A central open Atrium drains water from the extensive green roof into a bamboo planter garden where the water is filtered and collected in cisterns below the raised floor plate providing water for the entire home. The raised floor plate also allows for remote, continuous composter tanks to receive waste from the two main bathrooms directly above. Greywater is collected and filtered through a constructed wetland then returned to the earth. An array of photovoltaics and vertical wind turbine systems take advantage of the variable weather conditions at the site. The site’s driveway is a porous block pavement system. DESCRIPTION MILIEU’s total floor area is 2,200 sq.ft.
