Built as the Central Building at Iowa State University in 1906, it replaced Old Main which was damaged by a fire in 1900 and destroyed by a second fire in 1902. The building included the Mathematics, English, Botany, History, and Modern Language departments, as well as the President, Provost, Treasurers and Board of Trustees offices. After completion the Library was moved from Morrill Hall to a larger space in the Central Building. It was renamed Beardshear Hall in 1938, after William M. Beardshear who was president at Iowa State from 1891 to 1902. By the 1970s all classes had been moved out of the building and the spaces became offices for the Registrar, Student financial aid, Provost, and President. The original design by Proudfoot & Bird has only undergone slight renovations for fire code and accessibility and retains much of its original character. Modeled by Benjamin Schwartz.
