The "bridge of the two watersides" is a pedestrian and cyclist bridge over the river Rhine. It is the heart of the transfrontier garden festival between the cities of Strasbourg and Kehl. It was designed by the Parisian architect Marc Mimram and inaugurated on 23 April 2004. The 275 m long bridge was made of 1050 tons of steel and cost 21 million euros. The bridge is a symbol for Europe growing together and the German-French friendship. On 4 April 2009, Heads of State met on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the NATO at the center of the bridge for a symbolic handshake.
