Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a granite carving of the heads of the past US presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The sculptures were the creation of Gutzon Borglum and were carved between 1927 and 1941. Borglum died in 1941 and his son Lincoln then took control. Shortly afterwards the project was stopped due to a lack of funds. The sculptures were originally intended to include the full upper body of each president. The model includes the Hall of Records which is a large tunnel behind the statues that Borglum carved out of solid rock. It was to contain important documents such as the Declaration of Independence but it was never completed. For an excellent history of the monument see http://www.ohranger.com/mount-rushmore/making-mount-rushmore Modelled by Peter Olsen. Brighton-le-Sands, Sydney, Australia.
