The Evansville Museum of Arts, History & Science is a general-interest museum located on the Ohio riverfront in downtown Evansville, Indiana. Founded in 1904, it is one of Southern Indiana's most established and significant cultural institutions, with comprehensive collections in art, history, anthropology, and science. The museum is now infamous for not knowing they had a rare Picasso in storage for decades. Donated in 1968, the glass mosaic "Seated Woman with Red Hat" sat in storage until it was discovered in 2012. Citing security and insurance costs for a piece valued at $30-40 million, the museum chose to sell it rather than put it on display. No one in the city ever had a chance to view it. At least the director of the museum, who oversaw the museum during this debacle, announced his retirement in 2012. He was in charge of the museum for 38 years while it sat in storage the entire time.
