The Ramstein Air Base is the largest U.S. Air Force base outside the U.S. and contains the headquarters of the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE). The Air Base is located just east of Ramstein, about 10 kilometers west of Kaiserslautern. It is used mainly as a European hub for cargo and troop transport, as well as the destination of evacuation flights, as there is the largest American military hospital in nearby Landstuhl. The Air Base has two runways with 3200 and 2830 m in length. About 35,000 military personnel and 6,000 civilians work at the base.
Disgracefully, U.S. nuclear weapons were stored here until 2005 (which caused the nuclear winter on the satellite photo...).
