Bruchsal Palace is the only ecclesiastical baroque residential palace on the Upper Rhine. The palace was built beginning in 1720 by Prince Bishop Damian Hugo von Schönborn, who made it the center of his absolutistic reign. In the period after 1836 the numerous buildings stood empty. Following the destruction in 1945, the state of Baden-Württemberg succeeded in reconstructing the main building and its splendid appointments between 1964 and 1975.
