The 'Kanalbrücke' is 918 m long and part of the waterway cross Magdeburg. Here the Mittellandkanal crosses at a height of 18.5 m the river Elbe. The Mittellandkanal (midland canal) runs in west-east direction and thus connects all major rivers in Central Europe. Previously, ships had to make a detour of 12 km through a lock system because of the height difference. Therefore, 1934 the desire came up for starting this construction, but it was discontinued in 1942 because of the war. With the growing inland water transport after reunification, the project was realized from 1997 to 2003 for 107 million euros. The width between supports is 227.4 m, besides a foreland bridge for connection to the Mittelland Canal. In total, over 22000 tons of steel were used.
