Designed in the neoclassical style in1922 by the Des Moines firm, Proudfoot, Rawson & Souers and built in 1929, the Memorial Union at Iowa State University is a memorial to those who lost their lives in World War I, and since World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Global War on Terrorism have been added. The original construction included the main 5 story section, the Great Hall, and the solemn memorial hall later renamed the Gold Star Room which included the names of the dead WWI veterans engraved in marble. By 1938 the south wing was built, enlarging the dance space, the commons area, and added a bowling alley. Construction on the northwest corner started in 1950, and included the west terrace, chapel, and browsing library. The original bookstore and Sun Room were built in 1957-1958 covering the South Terrace. The Parking Ramp was added in 1966 and in 1973 a southeast expansion for the bookstore and food court was completed and two additional floors were built on the southeast wing in 1978-1979. Most recently, an addition onto the bookstore on the South side and a stair and elevator tower on the Northeast side have been added. This model was done by Benjamin Schwartz.
