Inaugurated in 1975, the headquarters of the Mondadori Group is one of the most significant buildings designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer (1907), whose design and plans for the city of Brasilia had impressed Arnoldo Mondadori. The site, surrounded by a large lake, is made up of three elements: a large parallelepiped characterised by tall arches of varying widths, for the offices and editorial departments, linked to two low-rise and sinuous sections that appear to emerge out of the central building. The first is where the restaurant, canteen, bar and shops are located; while the second, in the form of a willow leaf, hosts a number of editorial departments, the Archive and the Auditorium. “With the Mondadori building I showed how important it is to maintain an external harmonious play on volume and free space, using arches of differing widths, with an unequal almost musical rhythm, that makes them distinctive”. Oscar Niemeyer. Referece: http://www.mondadori.it/ame/en/news/ar_sede.html
