Constructed in 1756, Nassau Hall is the historic and sentimental center of Princeton University. As described on nearby Fitzrandolph Gate, Nassau Hall served as the first seat of the Legislature of the State of New Jersey in 1776, was an artillery target during the Battle of Princeton in 1777, and was the meeting place of the United States Congress and Capitol of the United States from 30 June - 4 November 1783. When not directly "in the Nation's service," Nassau Hall has variously contained lecture halls, dining facilities, dormitory rooms, and, currently, University administration. The central southerly extension of Nassau Hall houses the faculty room, an ornate meeting room used since Woodrow Wilson's tenure as Princeton's President for faculty gatherings. The main door opens into Memorial Hall, a marble entry room which has served since 1919 as a memorial to Princetonians who have fallen in war. The tigers flanking the main entrance were added in 1911. Nassau Hall is a U.S. National Historic Landmark. The office of Shirley Tilghman, current President of Princeton University (and member of the Board of Directors at Google), sits within Nassau Hall. This model has been realigned to once again match the shifting Google-Earth terrain.
