The Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul is the oldest building on Benjamin Franklin Parkway in downtown Philadelphia. Construction began in 1846 and was finished 18 years later in 1864. The Cathedral is of the Italian Renaissance style with a cross shaped form. A large patinated copper, baldacchino dome covers the altar. The exterior of the Cathedral was constructed with brownstone from the quarries of Connecticuat and northern New Jersey. The facade of the church is graced with four Cornithean columns, and three bronze doors leading into the entrance hall. The four statues in the niches of the facade are the Sacred Heart, the Virgin Mary, and the Saints Peter and Paul, the patrons of the church. Model by Noel Nemcik.
