At Niederkirchnerstr, between Potsdamer Platz and Checkpoint Charlie, you will find a 200m (650ft) long section of original first wall which faced towards former West Berlin.
<p>
This section is a landmark since 1990 and, protected by fences, it preserved its appearance from that time: partially destroyed by private people who demolished the wall piece by piece after the Fall, either for souvenirs, some of them professionally to sell the pieces, or out of political motivation and to take part at the celebration-like act of destructing the wall as fast as possible in 1989/1990. These people were called "Mauerspechte" which can be translated as "Wall Woodpeckers"
