A reconstruction of the sprawling Dempsey-Vanderbilt is alomst at the northern boundary of the Art Deco Historic District, at 2009 Collins. The building front streches the entire block. The original hotel housed one of Jack Dempsey's restaurants, hence the name. This hotel, one of the very few large scale projects designed by Henry Hohauser was built in 1936, with an addition in 1940. in 2002, the 8 story Dempsey-Vanderbilt was torn down and completelt reconstructed as a ninety room boutique hotel, a part of the new Setai complex. The main mass of the building has very symmetrucal Art Deco styling. on the central section, the eye is led upward, by narrow windows, chevron shaped spandrel panels and fluted columns, thattransform in an ornamental cornice at the top. On the wings, a frieze in a triangular motif runs high along the parapet. curved balconies tie the main building to the reconstruction of Henry Hohausers 1940 addition. The reconstruction looks terrific, and the buildiners have done a fine job, though the new 40 story Setai tower around the back, seems misplaced, and makes the Dempsey-Vanderbilt look tiny, which it is not.
