After years of use as a railroad bridge, this structure was re-dedicated on June 8, 1988 as the Kardong Burlington Northern Bridge. The repurposed bridge is one of three foot bridges along the 39-mile long Centennial Trail running along the scenic shores of the Spokane River and is a popular spot for joggers, walkers, and citizens who like to soak up the Spokane River view from one of the bridge's four viewing platforms. Also linking Gonzaga and Washington State University Spokane in Spokane's University District, The Kardong Bridge was named after Don Kardong, the founder of Bloomsday, a 12k road race through Spokane that sees over 50,000 participants annually. "The reconstruction of the bridge was made possible through the efforts of the Logan Community Development Neighborhood, Burlington Northern Railroad, Glacier Park Company, and the City of Spokane," as its dedication plaque reads.
