Crissy Field is a problematic location for a private residence. Our proposal attempts to respond to these challenges while maximizing the benefits of this beautiful location.
This dwelling utilizes a pre-fabricated steel moment frame system to create an open and optimistically modern design next to one of America’s greatest engineering landmarks. The organization of the house is based on modernist courtyard homes, but the plan has been turned on its side in order to minimize the house’s footprint, maximize views, and create private outdoor space. The resulting two-bedroom, three-story house is compact and dramatic.
The house is raised above the ground on columns to maintain views across the site and create a sheltered, semi-private yard beneath the house. A bunker-like one-car garage hunkers beneath one end of the house and references the abandoned fortifications of the Presidio, while also creating an area of sloped lawn leading to the house’s front door. These elements lift the dwelling out of the park, while simultaneously anchoring it. The cream and terra cotta color scheme follows the standards that have unified over 150 years of Presidio architectural history.
Sustainable features integrated into the design include adjustable and orientation-appropriate sunshades, photo-voltaic panels, living roof, extensive natural ventilation, minimal hardscape, and the environmental benefits of pre-fabricated structural framing.
