Located in Des Moines, Iowa, the Iowa State Capitol was constructed between 1871 and 1886 and houses the Iowa General Assembly. The original cost of the building represents a figure greater than $2.8 million dollars. The interior features 29 different types of marble, 500 lb. brass and crystal chandeliers each made up of some 5,600 crystals. The dome of the capitol is gilded in tissue-thin sheets of pure 23-karat gold.
