Canadian leasing airline, Nationair, operated all variants of the DC-8 Super 60 family. One airline they were known for leasing out to was Nigeria Airways. In 1991, Nigeria Airways leased C-GMXQ (pictured here) and its flight crew to transport several Nigerian Muslim pilgrims to Mekkah. The airplane landed at Jeddah without incident. On takeoff however, as Nigeria Airways Flight 2120, C-GMXQ experienced a tire failiure related fire which destroyed the aircraft. Well aware of the fire, the Canadian crew tried to land the stricken DC-8 back at Jeddah, but the fire at through the hydraulics. When attempting to lower the landing gear, the DC-8s structure was compromised and the aircraft broke apart and crashed short of the runway, killing all on board. It remains to this day, the worst crash involving a Douglas DC-8 and one of the worst in Saudi Arabian history.
