"A fire hall has got to be red!" That's what the town counselors of Liebenwalde said - and Peter Garkisch of Berlin-based Dritte Haut® Architekten (Third Skin Architects) built them a red one. This piece of outstanding contemporary architecture is the new fire hall of Kreuzbruch volunteer firefighters. Completed in February 2009 in the middle of a vast wooden area 50 km (31 mi.) north of Berlin, Germany, the building combines rooms for the fire service as well as municipal administration offices and a hall for town meetings. All that is achieved on 340m² (3,700 sq.ft.). Built from local wood and brownstone the structure has been beautifully integrated into the rural surroundings. The upper floor meeting hall is providing a great view of the scenery and serves as a forest fire lookout at the same time. Much attention was given to energy-efficiency. Proposed energy cost of 60% of a comparable building and the option to later extend, double or replace the engine garage which is detached from the main building ensure a long usage period for this fire hall. - Lorenz Eisermann, Haus | Film | 3D .
